Next-generation AI for VBS3
VBS Control is a behavior tree-based AI system. It replaces the legacy finite-state machine AI in VBS3. It includes a set of developer tools, a visual AI editor, and a package of ready-made AI behaviors for use in VBS3. Behaviors include:
- Simple infantry squad maneuvers
- Military convoys
- Civilian “pattern of life” (ambiance)
- “AI on rails” (a GUI for giving very specific orders in the VBS3 mission editor)

My role as a manager
VBS Control grew out of work on the AI for VBS Tactics. In 2015, work on Tactics went on hold. Yet, work on VBS Control continued. The cross-functional team developing it became part of the VBS3 Feature Development Group.
I act as Lead Producer and Scaled Agile Product Owner for the teams in that group. This means I “manage the managers” of the teams. It includes providing oversight, high-level roadmap input, and checking alignment with business goals. I also act as a single point of accountability for when things go wrong.
